J. M. W. Turner, Saint Michael’s Mount, and Mont Saint-Michel: Recent Developments
Pieter Broucke, Professor of History of Art & Architecture Studies
A mid-nineteenth-century painting in a Vermont private collection depicts the Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, France. Could it have been painted by the great English artist J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851)? An investigation of the painting, updated with recent scientific analyses and an on-site investigation at the Mont Saint-Michel, by Professor Pieter Broucke (Department of History of Art and Architecture) sheds new light on this old question.
