COVID-19: Essential Information

Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

F-1 students may be authorized for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) to engage in a temporary practical training experience directly related to their major field of study when it is considered to be an integral part of an established curriculum.  At Middlebury, CPT may only be authorized when training experiences are for academic credit or are a required part of the academic program’s curriculum.

Middlebury’s winter term internships that are approved for credit by the Center for Careers and Internships (CCI) may qualify for CPT.  For summer 2021, Middlebury will once again offer the opportunity for CPT-eligible internships for credit through enrollment in the Middlebury Institute Fieldwork course. Consult the CCI internships webpage for more information.

Read below for information about:

  • Eligibility for CPT
  • CPT Application Process

Please note that CPT is only needed to participate in training experiences that are based in the United States.

ELIGIBILITY FOR CPT

  • You must have been lawfully enrolled as an F-1 student for a minimum of one full academic year.

  • The training opportunity must be directly related to your Middlebury academic major (i.e. major field of study).

  • You must have an offer of employment or training that qualifies for CPT prior to applying.

  • CPT may be paid or unpaid.
(Please note: Middlebury does not allow students to participate in paid winter term internships approved for credit; a stipend is allowed.)

  • CPT start and end dates must be within the dates of the academic course or experience to which it relates.

  • CPT may be approved for part-time (20 hours or less) or full-time (over 20 hours). If you use 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you will be ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT) at the same educational level.

  • All requests for CPT must be received and approved before the start of your practical training. Students may only begin the internship on or after the CPT start date on their updated I-20.

  • CPT authorization is employer/program specific and for the designated period of time only. Any work that you engage in outside of your dates of approved CPT will be considered unauthorized employment.
