The Fulbright program was created by the U.S. Congress in 1946 “to foster mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchanges.”

Grants Available

  • Open Study/Research: Independent research, graduate programs, internships or a combination of study and research. See the lists of field-specific award opportunities and graduate degree grants.

  • English Teaching Assistant (ETA): Teach English language and culture in primary schools, high schools, and universities. See the list of countries that offer ETA grants.

  • Critical Language Enhancement Awards (CLEA): Three to six months of intensive language study in addition to research or study grants in eligible languages. CLEA info

Approximately 1900 grants to 140+ countries.

Eligibility

  • U.S. citizen
  • Preference to students who have received the majority of their higher education at a U.S. institution.
  • Preference for candidates who have not resided or studied in the country to which they are applying for more than six months. Study abroad or military duty is not disqualifying.
  • Applicants must hold a BA or the equivalent degree before the beginning date of the grant. Applicants may not hold a doctoral degree at the time of application
  • Applicants must have sufficient proficiency in the written and spoken language of the host country to communicate with the people and to carry out the proposed study.
  • Good health. Grantees will be required to submit a satisfactory Certificate of Health from a physician.

Note: We strongly encourage undergraduate alumni to apply through Middlebury. If applying through Middlebury, you must adhere to Middlebury’s internal deadline and application process. Alumni may also apply At Large. Senior applicants must apply through Middlebury.

Deadlines

See Fulbright Applicant Checklist and Guideline documents above for specific details and requirements.

  • April 15, Preliminary Application Deadline: Complete the online preliminary application in Middlebury Apply (available mid-March).

  • August 15, Intent to Apply Deadline: See the application checklist for specific instructions. No recommendations needed at this point. Note that current Middlebury seniors must apply through Middlebury. Middlebury alumni may apply through Middlebury or At-Large.

  • Thursday, September 8 at Noon: Middlebury Internal Deadline. All applications must be submitted in the Fulbright Application Portal by this date. Any issues, contact Dean Gates.

Submit a complete, proofed and final application online. Even though the submitted online application at this point is only seen by Middlebury, it needs to be the final version since it is forwarded to Fulbright once the committee evaluation is added.

Interviews with the Middlebury Fulbright committee will be scheduled 2-3 weeks after the internal deadline.

Final Fulbright Deadline: October 11, 2022 at 5 pm. (2023 TBA)
