To provide a continuing source of highly qualified individuals for academic study and research in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering by awarding scholarships to outstanding sophomores and juniors who demonstrate interest in related fields.

The stipend covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 annually, independent of need. Maximum two years for juniors; one year for seniors.
Up to 250
Students who are U.S. citizens, resident aliens, or U.S. nationals, sophomores and juniors, and having a 3.0 or better GPA are eligible to apply. Most competitive applicants have GPAs of 3.7 or higher.
Note: Students who plan to study medicine are eligible only if they plan a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor in private practice.
Nomination application deadline is noon on November 10 and Goldwater final deadline is in January.
To apply, you must be nominated by Middlebury. Middlebury can nominate up to four candidates.
To apply for nomination, Interested candidates must do the following:
- Complete a profile and preliminary Goldwater application by the internal deadline
- Email copies of your unofficial transcript, a current resume and your state of permanent residence to email@example.com.
- If you are planning a research MD/PhD, include in your email a paragraph with a rationale as to why this degree program is necessary for your planned area of research. The Goldwater pre-application does not have space to include this information.
- Submit the online Fellowships Permissions and Waiver form.
Note: No letters of recommendation are required at this stage, only the names of potential recommenders.
If you are nominated, you will will solicit letters of recommendation and work with the fellowships advisor to prepare the full Goldwater application for submission deadline in January.
