The Truman Scholarship Program recognizes students with interests in graduate or professional study and careers in public affairs and public service.

Award

Up to $30,000 for three years of graduate and professional study.

Service Requirement: Scholars are required to work in public service for three of the seven years following completion of a Foundation-funded graduate degree program as a condition of receiving Truman funds.

Number Offered

600-700 applicants; 55-65 scholarships awarded. Middlebury may nominate up to four candidates.

Eligibility

Students who are juniors at the time of application—February of each year—must be nominated by Middlebury College. Nominees must be United States citizens, and must intend to enroll in a graduate program leading to a career in government, the nonprofit or advocacy sectors, education or elsewhere in the public service. Students must be in the top quartile of their class, generally requiring a GPA of 3.7 or better.

Deadlines

Nomination application deadline is November 10, Truman final deadline is in February.

Application Process

To apply, you must be nominated by Middlebury. To be nominated, interested candidates must submit the following as a pdf file to fellowships@middlebury.edu by the internal deadline above:

  • A current resume (include awards and honors, employment, internships, public service, community activities)

  • A copy of your advising transcript from BannerWeb

  • Completed Truman Preliminary Application

Also, submit the online Fellowships Permissions and Waiver Form

Selected nominees will solicit letters of recommendation and work with the fellowships advisor to prepare for the final Truman submission deadline in February.
