Purpose

The Vermont Law School/Middlebury College Environmental Scholarship is a selective program established in 2012. The scholarship is intended to support outstanding individuals who demonstrate environmental and public interest involvement and who can effect change.

Award

Full tuition scholarship for Juris Doctor (JD), Masters in Environmental Law and Policy program or joint JD/Master in Environmental Law and Policy program.

Number Offered

1-2 annually

Eligibility

  • Candidates must be nominated for the scholarship by Middlebury College.
  • Candidates must be in their senior year of college or a recent alumnus of a Middlebury degree program (College, Language Schools, Bread Loaf School of English, MIIS).
  • Successful admission to Vermont Law School as an Environmental Scholarship recipient is contingent upon clearance of character and fitness requirement.

Academic Requirements for Scholarship Consideration

For Juris Doctor (JD) or joint JD/Master in Environmental Law and Policy (MELP) program:

  • Minimum cumulative GPA: 3.65
  • Minimum LSAT: 160
  • Demonstrated involvement in the environment
  • Commitment to service through campus and/or community activities

For Masters in Environmental Law and Policy program:

  • Minimum Cumulative GPA: 3.65
  • Demonstrated involvement in the environment
  • Commitment to service through campus and/or community activities

Application Process

To be considered for nomination:

  • Candidates must submit an application for nomination to Middlebury College by February 18, 2024 (noon ET).
  • Candidates must have applied and been accepted to VLS by this deadline.

Nomination materials include:

  • Letter of application, detailing the ways you fulfill the scholarship criteria
  • Recommendation from ES faculty member and/or Middlebury pre-law advisor, Professor Murray Dry
  • Official transcript from undergraduate and, if applicable, graduate institutions
