Training
An important component of laboratory safety is to ensure that all lab workers and building users are properly trained.
Anyone working in Middlebury’s Science Building, McCardell Bicentennial Hall (MBH), who has access to the building outside of regular business hours, must complete a safety training that provides important information related to hazards that may be encountered in certain areas of the building, as well as appropriate emergency response measures. The training that needs to be completed is designed specifically for your role within the building.
In-Person Training
Most research students and student employees (such as TAs) in the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Climate Sciences, and Neuroscience are required to complete an in-person lab safety training prior to beginning their work. Other departments vary by lab.
Summer drop-in sessions:
- May 12, 11a-Noon
- June 1, 2-3pm
- June 8, 1-2pm
- June 15, 3-4pm
*All sessions are held in MBH 148*
If there is not a scheduled in-person training session prior to a student’s start date, please contact labsafety@middlebury.edu to arrange an alternative.
Faculty, Staff, and Students Working In MBH
Personnel including faculty, staff, and students who work or study in McCardell Bicentennial Hall laboratories and spaces should complete a brief, general online hazards training.
Custodial Staff, Facilities Support, ITS, and Contractors Working in MBH
Custodial, Facilities Support, ITS, and contractors with Middlebury IDs working in the building should complete the online training specific to their role.

Contractors without Middlebury IDs should contact the Building Facilities Manager regarding their safety training requirements.
Radiation Safety Training
Anyone working with radiation producing instruments (XRF, XRD, pXRF) must complete Radiation Safety Training prior to use.
