Goldwater Scholarship

Purpose

To provide a continuing source of highly qualified individuals for academic study and research in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering by awarding scholarships to outstanding sophomores and juniors who demonstrate interest in related fields.

Award

The scholarship provides up to $7,500 per academic year toward tuition, mandatory fees, books, and room and board. Sophomores may receive up to two years of support; juniors may receive up to one year.

Number Offered

250–500 Goldwater Scholars annually

Eligibility

Students who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or U.S. nationals, are sophomores or juniors, and have a 3.0 or better GPA are eligible to apply. Most competitive applicants have GPAs of 3.7 or higher.

Note: Students pursuing an MD or MD/PhD may be eligible if research is central to their career plans. Students planning careers focused primarily on clinical practice are not eligible.

Deadlines

The MiddApply Goldwater nomination application deadline is noon on November 10. For nominees, the Goldwater final deadline is the last Friday in January.

Application Process

Middlebury can nominate up to four candidates.

To apply for nomination, complete the Goldwater Nomination Application in MiddApply.

Note: The MiddApply application requires you to submit a Google Doc Goldwater Nomination Application. The application is lengthy, so plan accordingly.

Attend the in-person info session on September 21 at 4:30pm in Library 201.

Submit the MiddApply Goldwater Nomination by November 10. You need two faculty support statements, so talk with your faculty in advance of this deadline.

If you are nominated, you will revise your Goldwater materials with the fellowships advisor for submission in late January.
