AUGUST 2-6, WEDNESDAY-SUNDAY
Big Love
by Charles Mee
8:30 P.M. each evening;
Burgess Meredith Little Theatre on the Bread Loaf mountain campus
The Bread Loaf Acting Ensemble presents
Big Love
, by Obie Award winner Charles Mee, as its annual public theatre production. A fiercely extravagant adaptation of Aeschylus'
The Suppliant Maidens
(490 BC),
Big Love
had its premier in the 2000 Humana Festival of New American Plays at the Actors Theatre of Louisville. Mee, a former magazine editor and historian, uses the basic plotline—50 sisters flee arranged marriages to their 50 cousins—as a launch pad for the so-called "battle of the sexes." Mee asks the audience to look at how humans behave when they are in crisis mode, and what it would be like to live consistently in that state. The play contains language and situations for mature audiences.
Free, but tickets required. For reservations, call the Bread Loaf Theatre at 802-443-2737.
