Composer-performer Philip Hamilton '82 is a leading contemporary composer of music for dance, and a well-known vocalist in jazz and world music.  He visits his alma mater as an Alexander Twilight Scholar this January 9-12, including this public performance. During his residency, he also works with students in dance and music (Jazz percussion workshop on Wednesday 1/11 at 7:00 P.M in CFA 221; vocal improvisation workshop on Thursday 1/12 at 2:00 P.M. in CFA 221.) Free

Past, present, and future come together in Ming-Liang Tsai's nostalgic homage and farewell to an era. A Japanese tourist takes refuge from a rainstorm inside a run-down movie theatre showing a martial arts classic, King Hu's 1966 Dragon Inn, only to learn that some of those in the audience are less interested in the movie than in the possibility of meeting a stranger in the dark. In Concert: Mark Stuver '98 and Rachael Lincoln

San Francisco dance artists and winter term visiting instructors, Mark Stuver '98 and Rachael Lincoln present a concert of dances, including Remember This, a duet performed in the U.S., in Berlin, and at the Dublin Fringe Festival. Stuver and Lincoln are members of Project Bandaloop, the sensational company that danced while suspended from the roof of the new College library last fall. They have been creating work and teaching together since 2000 and have performed with contemporary dance ensembles worldwide. Stuver, a Middlebury alum, was also honored for his senior dance work at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Don't miss this athletic, provocative evening of dance partnership. Let Freedom Sing!
A Celebration of the American Negro Spiritual and the Life and Words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Join Alexander Twilight Artist in Residence François Clemmons and the Middlebury Spiritual Choir in this eighth annual celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The choir includes over 80 members, drawn from the College's student body, faculty, and staff, and the greater community, all coming together to sing in honor of this slain civil rights pioneer. New York-based actor Esau Pritchett returns with a passionate interpretation of the words of Dr. King. This year, expect a special tribute to the late Rosa Parks, considered by many to be the modern-day mother of the civil rights movement. Free

One woman's search for sanity: a game show, a nightmare, a steam cleaner, a very short tune and a very long list. Gail Marlene Schwarz MFA-IA was Co-Artistic Director of the Green Mountain Guild Theater for 7 years.  Her last solo piece, Thinly Veiled, was developed during a fellowship at the Hambidge Center for the Arts. Two multimedia collaborations, Horse/Divorce and Movingreceived NASA grants from the Flynn Theater in Burlington, Vermont.  Her video short, In Good Hands, is included in the group show, Give Us a Hand, at Studio Place Arts in Barre, Vermont.  Crazy is hosted by Janice Perry, Winter Term Visiting Faculty ("Performing Identity") Middlebury College Department of Theatre. Lecture by Neal Zaslaw, Herbert Gussman Professor of Music, Cornell University. Taking Mozart's life and music as its focus, this talk explores ways in which musical activities can shed light on general history, even as general history sheds light on music. The lecture, illustrated with recorded music, slides, and video clips, is presented in conjunction with the concert by Leopoldo Erice later in the evening. Free

Acclaimed Spanish pianist Leopoldo Erice visits Middlebury to perform a concert of works by Mozart, Haydn, and Schubert.  Winner of many prestigious competitions such as the Royale (1989), Gregorio Baudot (1994), and Infanta Cristina (1994, 1996, and 1998), Erice has performed extensively in Spain. He made his debut as a soloist with the Symphony Orchestra of the Royal Conservatory of Madrid in 1999, and he has also given recitals in the USA, Colombia, Panama, Lithuania, Germany, Luxembourg, and Italy. The Dance Company of Middlebury

Join us for the Dance Company of Middlebury's (DCM) annual performance, this year a premiere of a thought-provoking new work, Enemies. Choreographed by Artist in Residence Amy Chavasse and created collaboratively with company members, the 30-minute work examines the fractious and shifting nature of human and societal conflicts and interactions. Using video projections by Sue Rees, an internationally recognized artist and a Bennington College faculty member, the dance is a musical and visual collage that includes compositions by world-renowned drummer-composer Philip Hamilton '82.  The New York-based company everything smaller joins DCM to perform Spatula Sound Check, a humorous duet originally created and performed by Chavasse and Peter Schmitz in 2001.
