Dancing Across Borders: Performance and Discussion
4:30 P.M., Center for the Arts, Dance Theatre
This project features the collaborative work of six dynamic, passionate, and innovative artists from Canada and the United States who have personal roots and an active professional presence in either Quebec or New England, or both. Two of the performers, Paul Matteson and Robert Bergner, are Middlebury College alumni. Paul Matteson, Lin Snelling, Michael Reinhart, Pamela Newell, and Robert Bergner offer a flowing, shifting, kaleidoscope of creativity. The cast, structure, and content vary from night to night as the artists use their expansive talents to improvise new facets to the work. Their arsenal of tools includes movement, text, voice, painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, and a panoply of musical instruments—guitar, piano, percussion, accordion, cello, violin, flûte à bec, harmonica, ocarina, and found objects. Sponsored by the Dance Program; cosponsored by the Rohatyn Center for International Affairs, Tangente in Montreal, the Flynn Theatre in Burlington, and Keene State College in New Hampshire.  See associated event at 2:30 P.M. Free

FEBRUARY 16, FRIDAY
Pieter Wispelwey, cello
Dejan Lazić, piano
7:30 P.M.Center for the Arts, Concert Hall
The last time this duo played at Middlebury, a highlight of their program was a Beethoven sonata. They have recorded all of Beethoven’s music for cello and piano: five sonatas plus three glorious sets of variations (two sets on themes from Mozart’s Magic Flute, and another set on a theme by Handel.) Now they play this whole collection of Beethoven music for us. They are remarkable musical partners, and this music is a feast of melody, instrumental virtuosity, and Beethovenian genius. Please note the early starting time of 7:30 p.m. Sponsored by the Middlebury College Performing Arts Series. Reserved Seating: $15/12/5. http://go.middlebury.edu/tickets or 802-443-MIDD (6433).
Pre-performance dinner: Rehearsals Cafe, 6:00 P.M. Reservations required.

Director Bennett Miller’s award-winning film about Truman Capote’s writing of his “nonfiction novel,” In Cold Blood, is a riveting masterpiece. In 1959 the celebrated novelist investigates the brutal and senseless murder of the Clutter family on their Kansas farm. The conflicts between the writer’s creative ambition and his relationship with his subjects generate a disturbing tension that makes Capote a distinctive exploration of the creative process. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays the writer in an Academy Award-winning performance. Sponsored by the Hirschfield International Film Series. (U.S., 2005, 114 minutes) Free
