ON VIEW THROUGH AUGUST 12
Chinese Blue-and-White Porcelains of the Ming and Qing Dynasties from the Rui Fang and Barbara P. and Robert P. ’64 Youngman Collections
10:00 A.M.-5:00 P.M. (Tuesday-Friday); 12:00-5:00 P.M. (Saturday-Sunday); closed Monday; Museum of Art
Admired for the brilliance of their coloring and the virtuosity of their designs, Chinese blue-and-white porcelains represent one of the supreme achievements in the history of decorative art. Originating around the 14th century, possibly as a response to a stimulus from Islamic markets, they were exported in huge quantities and were prized possessions at the courts of Western Asia and India. They were also exported to Japan, Southeast Asia, Africa, and eventually to Europe and America, and in all these regions inspired local (but always inferior) versions. This exhibition presents outstanding examples of Chinese blue-and-white, including an exceptionally rare “Palace Bowl” and other pieces made for the imperial Chinese court.
The exhibition is part of the Robert F. Reiff Gallery of Asian Art, which is generously funded by Barbara P. and Robert P. ’64 Youngman. Free
