Residency by Ethnomusicologist Sylvia Nannyonga-Tamusuza

Dr. Sylvia Nannyonga-Tamusuza is Associate Professor of Music at Makerere University (Uganda), where she is also the curator of the Klaus Wachsmann Music Archive. She is a sought-after presenter on topics such as Ugandan, popular, and church music; school music competitions; sexuality in music and dance; politics; plus gender and music. In this suite of three lead-up events to The Nile Project in April, Nannyonga-Tamusuza will explore aspects of music and dance selected from cultures in the Nile basin (Uganda in particular) and how they directly benefit from and are shaped by the resources of the Nile. Sponsored by the Mahaney Center for the Arts, the Performing Arts Series, the Arts Council, the Department of Music, the Dance Program, and the New England Foundation for the Arts. Free.

Camille A. Brown is a prolific choreographer who has earned multiple accolades and awards for her daring works. Her latest work, Black Girl: Linguistic Play, is a multimedia depiction of the complexities of carving out a positive identity as a black female in urban American culture. Combining history and musicology with fantastical imagery from Alice in Wonderland, this work offers a grand narrative reflecting on feminism, patriarchy, and how women navigate within this world. Middlebury’s performances during women’s history month also include works by three female emerging choreographers. Sponsored by the Performing Arts SeriesDance Program, and Committee on the Arts. The Tale of Genji: Japanese Calligraphy Demonstration and Workshop

To celebrate Middlebury College Museum’s recent acquisition of The Tale of Genji folding screens, award-winning Japanese calligraphy artist Masako Inkyo joins Professor Sarah Laursen (History of Art & Architecture) and Professor Carole Cavanaugh (Japanese Studies) for a special demonstration and talk about this ancient and influential novel and Japanese ancient and modern writing styles.  Refreshments will be served. The lecture/demonstration will be followed by a hands-on workshop led by Inkyo, in which participants will have the opportunity to learn basic calligraphy strokes and Japanese characters. All supplies provided. The workshop takes place from 5:30-6:30 PM in the Mahaney Center for the Arts, Room 126. Scratching the Surface: Intaglio Prints

Johnson Memorial Building, Mezzanine

Students in Hedya Klein’s class display the works they created while exploring traditional and contemporary methods of printmaking using drawing, layering, and hand-coloring applications. Intaglio encompasses an array of techniques: in essence, ink is applied to a plate, which can be made of anything from copper to cardboard, and then transferred onto paper by pulling it through a press. Bart Devolder, “The Conservation and Study of the Ghent Altarpiece by the Brothers Van Eyck”

Bart Devolder, member of the restorationteam of the Royal Institute  for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) will speak about his work restoring  Jan Van Eyck's Altarpiece of the Mystic Lamb, also known as the Ghent Altarpiece, one of the most important paintings in the history of western art. The conservation/restoration treatment of the altarpiece began in October 2012 in the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent, where the public can witness every step. The Empty Room and the End of Man

During the 1960s and early 1970s many artists in the United States created works that encouraged viewers to engage in an expansively spatial manner, so that the gallery itself became an aesthetically-charged site. Many of the original viewers of these works experienced these unconventional, frequently austere, and affectless objects and installations as threatening and even aggressive. Drawing upon the original reception of some of the most significant public exhibitions of minimal and postminimal art (taking the work of William Anastasi, Dan Flavin, Robert Barry, and Bruce Nauman as key examples), Robert Slifkin argues that these works and environments produced imaginary figurations of what the world would look and feel like if the viewer was the last person on Earth. Sponsored by the Department of History of Art and Architecture. Charles Sheeler (born 1883) and Albert Einstein (born 1879) were almost exact contemporaries yet unacquainted. Maroney discusses how Sheeler, in 1916, barely a year after Einstein’s second paper in 1915 and three years before the eclipse that confirmed his theories, discovered for himself how to incorporate the fourth dimension, or "space time," into two-dimensional art and photography.
