May 5 Concert Comes Fresh on the Heels of a Spring Tour
Middlebury, VT—The Middlebury College Department of Music presents The Sound Investment Jazz Ensemble on Saturday, May 5, at the Mahaney Center for the Arts. Coming fresh on the heels of the ensemble’s spring tour, this concert is entitled “Back Home Again!”
The Sound Investment Jazz Ensemble (SIJE) is the Music Department’s big band. Its repertoire includes the best of contemporary jazz arrangements, classic charts of the swing and jazz genres, and original compositions and arrangements by members of the Middlebury community. The Ensemble draws from a traditional mix of saxophones, trombones, trumpets, piano, guitar, bass, and drums, sometimes supplemented by other instruments and vocalists. The SIJE’s student musicians are some of the College’s finest jazz players, all led by Director of Jazz Activities Dick Forman. Their lively and popular performances are always sure to set toes tapping.
The SIJE recently completed a New England tour with stops at Amherst College and the Rivers School (Weston, Massachusetts). The trip featured collaborative work with students, as well as successful joint performances at both schools. The May 5 concert at Middlebury will reprise selections from that tour, ranging from classic Count Basie and Buddy Rich arrangements to recent works that explore new directions for jazz ensembles. The SIJE will also play Billy Strayhorn’s rarely-heard piece, “Pretty Little One,” written for string trio and jazz sextet and recorded by Duke Ellington in 1963.
“Back Home Again!” will take place on Saturday, May 5, 2012, at 8:00 P.M., at the Mahaney Center for the Arts Concert Hall. The Mahaney Center for the Arts is located at 72 Porter Field Road in Middlebury, just off Route 30 south. Admission is free.
