Purpose

The Beinecke Scholarship supports graduate study in the arts, humanities or social sciences, “to encourage and enable highly motivated students to pursue opportunities available to them and to be courageous in the selection of a graduate course of study.”

Award

$5,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school

Approximately 20 annually

Fields of Study

Research- or creative-focused master’s or doctoral program in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. NOTE: Students who plan to pursue graduate study in neuroscience or clinical psychology should not apply.

Eligibility

Current junior who demonstrates “superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement, and personal promise.” Documented history of need-based financial aid and U.S. citizenship required. Must plan to enter a master’s or doctoral program in the arts, humanities, or social sciences within a year of graduation. Level of need will be a consideration at both the nomination and final selection stages of the process. 

Deadlines

Nomination application deadline is January 27 (noon), Beinecke final deadline is the last Friday in March.

Application Process

To apply, you must be nominated by Middlebury. Middlebury nominates one candidate.

To be nominated, complete the fellowship registration, Beinecke application section, and recommendation request in Midd Apply. A statement of faculty support required for MiddApply Beinecke section.

Nomination Application Questions

The selected nominee will solicit three letters of recommendation and work with the fellowships advisor to submit a formal application to the Beinecke Foundation by the final deadline.
