The Doctor of Modern Languages (DML) degree program, established in 1927, is unique to Middlebury College and reflects our commitment to the promotion of excellence in second-language acquisition, literature, linguistics, and language pedagogy.
The DML, offered in French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish, prepares teachers and scholars in two modern foreign languages, including the literature, linguistics and culture associated with each.
During the summer session, each director, in consultation with the office of the Vice President for Language Schools, Schools Abroad, and Graduate Programs, holds primary responsibility for his or her School's DML program. During the academic year, the vice president coordinates the DML program for all Schools, consulting with the individual directors as needed.
