The best way to learn a language is to live it.

Since 1915, Middlebury Language Schools has been one of the nation’s preeminent language learning programs. By curating a summer full of rich and immersive academic and cocurricular experiences in language, we foster the best opportunity for rapidly improved proficiency—from beginner to graduate level.

  • Fully immerse yourself in a community of motivated learners and highly skilled, supportive faculty. Live, play, and learn in language. Learn more about our approach.

  • Take the Language Pledge® and formally commit to communicating only in your language of study for your entire time in the program.

  • Quickly acquire linguistic and cultural fluency, as well as results you’ll take pride in for life, with our expertly design language programs.

  • Graduate students can complete a degree over four six-week summers in Vermont, or over one or two six-week summers and an academic year abroad. See program information in your language of interest for details.

  • Apply for scholarships and need-based financial aid—in the form of grants, not loans.

Program Options

Whether you’re a language learner or a scholar, we have intricately designed program options for your level of interest.

Immersion Programs

Substantially grow your language proficiency over seven or eight weeks. Those who arrive with basic language skills expand them dramatically, allowing them to engage with native speakers in informed discussions of cultural, political, or social issues. Those with more advanced skills can hone and refine their capabilities. Shorter programs are offered in Hebrew, Russian, and Italian.

Graduate Programs

Earn a Master of Arts degree, Master of Arts in Applied Languages degree, or a Doctorate of Modern Languages degree. Explore available languages by program below for detailed requirements. Non-degree seeking students with appropriate skills can apply to attend our graduate programs for one summer.
