Gabriel Guillén

Professor Guillén is a seasoned educator, researcher, and practitioner in the fields of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), Intercultural Competence (ICC), experiential learning, and film studies. He holds a PhD in Spanish Linguistics with an emphasis in Second Language Acquisition from the University of California, Davis, and an M.A. in Applied Linguistics for the Teaching of Spanish from Nebrija University in Madrid, Spain. Guillén started teaching at the Middlebury Institute in 2014 and was promoted to full professor in 2024. He also worked for the Middlebury School in Spain as coordinator of student affairs.

At the Institute, Professor Guillén has taught language education, CALL, ICC, and content-based Spanish courses. Recently, Guillén led the creation of language specialization for professional purposes across six languages, produced the ICC curriculum adopted across all McGraw Hill Spanish textbooks, published Sabor y Amor (2024), the first OER Spanish textbook at the Middlebury Language School, and created the TAMC Fellowship in collaboration with the Transportation Agency for Monterey County. He also founded Team Tandem in 2015, connecting Spanish and English learners in Salinas, California, and co-authored the third edition of Brave New Digital Classroom (2020), which introduced a new focus on social CALL.
