Housni Bennis holds an M.A. in Comparative Literature from Washington University in St. Louis where he is a Senior Lecturer in Arabic Studies in the department of Jewish, Islamic, and Middle Eastern Studies.
Housni has held teaching positions at prestigious institutions such as Brown University, University of Virginia, New York University, and the Middlebury Language Schools’ Arabic School. At Washington University, he has served in various leadership capacities, including as the Arabic Section Head and Coordinator of the Arabic Language Program. Additionally, he has directed the Wash U-AALIM summer Arabic program in Meknes, Morocco. As a member of a professional team, he contributed to the modification of the ACTFL Arabic proficiency guidelines and the development of the Arabic ACTFL proficiency writing examination.
His research interests encompass language pedagogy and curriculum development. He has presented his findings at esteemed conferences such as MESA, addressing topics ranging from “Inclusive Language Teaching” to “Enhancing Linguistic and Cultural Competencies through Multimodal Content.” Recently, he reviewed Modern Standard Arabic by Shokry Gohar and David Nancekivell for Cambridge University Press.
