Jason Martel is Director of Middlebury Language Schools’ Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Program and Professor of Language Teacher Education at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. He holds an M.A. in French from Middlebury’s Betty Ashbury Jones MA ’86 School of French and a Ph.D. in Second Languages and Cultures Education from the University of Minnesota. He teaches a wide range of courses in applied linguistics and language education and has held several leadership positions within Middlebury, including Associate Director of the Institute’s Summer Intensive Language Program (SILP) and TESOL/TFL Program Chair.
Jason’s scholarship addresses pressing topics in language curriculum design, assessment, and teacher learning. His book, Moving Beyond the Grammatical Syllabus: Practical Strategies for Content-Based Curriculum Design (Routledge, 2022), reflects his commitment to helping teachers design thematic units that are intellectually challenging and rich in opportunities for language learning. His publications include chapters in edited books as well as articles in the journals Foreign Language Annals, TESOL Journal, French Review, Modern Language Journal, and Journal of Applied Language Learning, among others.
Beyond his teaching and research, Jason is an active contributor to the broader language education community. He has served as chair of ACTFL’s Teacher Development Special Interest Group and has consulted with organizations such as the College of the Muscogee Nation, the Middlebury School in Jordan, and the College Board. His work has been recognized with many awards, including the Stephen A. Freeman Award for Best Published Article from the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, the Excellence in Teacher Development Award from ACTFL’s Teacher Development Special Interest Group, and the Middlebury Institute’s Faculty Excellence Award.
Jason is especially proud to be a “Triple Panther,” having studied or worked in three distinct Middlebury entities: the Betty Ashbury Jones MA ’86 School of French, the Middlebury School in Paris, and the Middlebury Institute of International Studies.
