The undergraduate research office has funds available to support eligible expenses related to senior work, academic travel, and other research activities.

Apply for Funding

Read the following fund descriptions carefully so you understand which ones are appropriate for your purpose. Applications requiring committee review have firm deadlines. Other applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. To apply, you must submit an application in MiddApply.

Academic Travel Fund (ATF)

Purpose: Students presenting at or attending an academic conference.

Deadline: Thirty days prior to the conference or travel start date. Because of limited funds, late applications may not be considered.

  • Students attending an academic conference, but not presenting work, can apply for up to $350.
  • Students presenting papers, posters, or in another similar way actively sharing their work in a conference program are eligible for grants of up to $1,000.
  • For group conference presentation and/or attendance, the maximum award is $3000.
  • Only one application per student per academic year will be funded.
  • If this award does not fully cover travel costs, students should also look for additional funding sources.
  • Note: URO does not fund participation or presentations at conferences that are not clearly academic and does not fund participation in seminars or programs, courses or classes. In all cases, there must be a strong connection to a student’s major or minor academic program of study.
  • ATF funds are limited. We may not be able to fully fund requests; once funds are fully allocated, we will not be able to fund additional applications. URO does not provide funding for seniors after graduation.

Senior Research Project Supplement (SRPS)

Purpose: Funding for senior work projects.

Deadline: For applications up to $1200, there are three deadlines in AY25-26: Oct. 1, Jan. 24, and Apr. 15. For applications of $350 or less, applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis.

  • If your research is focused on Russian Studies, Russian language, Russia, post-Soviet countries, and related topics, to be conducted either in the US or abroad – you may be eligible for up to $3000 per project. Please select the Padma Desai fund in your MiddApply application to be considered for this fund.
  • If your research is for advanced, in-country research in areas of the world that are either developing as nations, or where conditions are experiencing rapid societal, political or other fundamental change, you may be eligible for up to $3000 per project. Your application must include an additional paragraph explaining how your target research country fits the country definition in the overview for consideration. Select the Hoskin Research Fund in your MiddApply application to be considered for this fund.

As a general note, projects with expenses exceeding the maximum award amount must provide information about additional funding sources to confirm adequate total funding for the project as outlined.

Kellogg Fellowship

Purpose: If your senior research is in the Humanities or related to humanistic studies, you may be eligible for the Kellogg Fellowship valued at $5,000. Students apply as juniors or senior Febs.

Deadline: March 1 for projects occurring the following academic year.

  • The Kellogg Fellowship provides highly motivated students engaging in areas of humanistic study with research support for senior work related to their major program of study. The fellowship may be used for travel and research expenses incurred during the summer and academic semesters.
  • Middlebury juniors and junior and senior Febs who meet departmental requirements for independent senior work and will pursue that work during the following summer and/or academic year (one or more semesters)
  • A committee composed of the associate dean for fellowships and research and faculty members from different disciplines review applications and select fellows.
  • Learn more about what to expect in the application, Fellowship responsibilities, and bios of previous winners.

Additional Funding Available for Middlebury Students

Research in the Field of American or Japanese Studies

You can apply for up to $1,000 per academic year from the Selover Research Fund. If your proposal requires travel, the application deadline is 30 days prior to travel, otherwise it is on a rolling basis. Expenses incurred prior to funding approval are not accepted.

Research in Conjunction with Study Abroad

For research either preceding or immediately following your abroad program, students can apply for up to $3,000 through the Leslie T. Ketzel ‘49 fund. Deadlines are Oct. 15 and Apr. 15. Students must be accepted for a study abroad program. Priority is given to students participating in Middlebury Schools Abroad. Expenses included in your study abroad budget, such as return airfare home, are not eligible for Ketzel funding.
