Each summer at Middlebury, over 130 students are engaged in on-campus and remote research with a faculty mentor, in topics ranging from biochemistry to philosophy.

If you are interested in working as a SRA on campus, reach out to your faculty during the late fall semester or J-term to understand opportunities. Faculty are responsible for identifying and hiring their summer research assistants (SRAs), and usually make decisions by April 1.

Students may also pursue research with faculty and researchers at other institutions, typically through Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) and Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) programs. Students may reach out to faculty at other institutions directly about summer research opportunities. For unpaid or low-paid external research opportunities, students can also apply for funding through the Center for Careers and Internships

More details about Middlebury’s Summer Research program

There is a full set of summer programming to engage SRAs beyond the classroom and lab, plus opportunities to meet peers at game nights, star viewing and more. SRAs also may choose to participate in the Summer Research Symposium, which usually takes place in late July.
