Auditions for Choir, Orchestra, Jazz Band, Spiritual Choir, College-Community Choir and "Into the Woods"

College Choir

Students may sign up for auditions by the Music Department Office:

Friday, September 7, 1:00-3:00 pm Saturday, September 8, 1:00-3:00 pm
Monday, September 10, 2:00-4:00 pm Tuesday, September 11, 9:00am-1:00 pm

Rehearsals are Monday and Wednesday, 4:30 - 6:30 pm in Mead Chapel.

Singers are requested (but NOT required) to prepare an excerpt provided. Singing a prepared solo is welcome but not required (1-2 minutes maximum).


Spiritual Choir

The Middlebury College Martin Luther King Spiritual Choir, conducted by Dr. François S. Clemmons, is open to all students, faculty, staff, and townsfolk who want a choral experience that is both challenging and exciting. We perform 2 concerts each year as well as during our special community-wide celebration of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King. Rehearsals are Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 - 6:30 pm in Mead Chapel. Auditions are not necessary. Attendance at rehearsals is mandatory.


Middlebury College Community Chorus, Jeff Rehbach, Conductor. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and area residents join together in singing classical music, folksong arrangements, and contemporary compositions. Needed: ability to follow a music score and interest in singing! No auditions – come to first rehearsals in Mead Chapel on Tuesday 9/11 or Sunday 9/16 at 7pm.


The Sound Investment Jazz Ensemble, Dick Forman, Director, is the College’s swingin’ 17-piece big band. The Jazz Workshop focuses on playing in combos.  A full description of both programs and audition details can be found at

Auditions will be held on Wednesday - Friday, September 12 – 14.  Sign up on the schedule posted on the Music Department bulletin board.  Contact Dick Forman for information.

The band rehearses on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 4:30 to 6:30, with additional sectional rehearsals as required

Auditions are not necessary for the Jazz Workshop. Feel free to just show up. The workshop meets Thursday afternoons, from 4:30 – 6:30, beginning in the second week of each term. 

 INTO THE WOODS, the J-term 2013 musical!

Brothers Grimm fairy tale characters weave their magic spell in Sondheim and Lapine's Tony Award winning musical, exploring what happens after "happily ever after." The show will be performed at the Town Hall Theater January 22 - 25, 2013.

Sign-up sheets for preliminary auditions will be located on the Music Dept. bulletin board (3rd floor, MCFA).  Please prepare a Broadway song and be prepared to read.  An accompanist will be provided, so please bring sheet music if you have it. Students must be available for fall vocal rehearsals.

College Orchestra, Andrew Massey, Conductor.

The Middlebury College Orchestra is for all members of the Middlebury Community, performing repertoire for full symphony orchestra. Rehearsals are Tuesday and Thursday, from 7 pm to 9 pm, in the Mahaney Center Concert Hall. 

Membership is by audition. Auditions this fall are on Wed. Sept. 12 and Thurs. Sept. 13, in 10-minute slots from noon until 7:00 pm. in the Music Department in Mahaney Center. There will be a sign-up sheet there, on the third floor notice board.. Audition repertoire is open.

The first rehearsal is on Tuesday, September 18th. Concerts this year are on Saturday November 17,   Thursday January 24 2013,   Friday March 15,   and Saturday April 13.

Repertoire this year will include Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony and Leonora Overture #2, Chausson’s Poeme for violin and orchestra, Dukas’ Fanfare for La Peri, Nicolai’s Overture Merry Wives of Windsor, Copland’s Appalachian Spring, and other works dependent upon the composition of the orchestra.
