MA Program Options

Once admitted in the Chinese MA program, you can choose to complete the degree in one of two ways:

Option1 Middlebury only
Complete the degree entirely in Middlebury, Vermont over four summers. Courses are taught in Chinese.

Option 2  Middlebury & Monterey
Complete the degree in a combination of two summers on the Middlebury, Vermont campus with one academic year at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS) in Monterey, California in between. To participate in this option, students must first apply and be accepted to Middlebury. Students admitted to MA Chinese and interested in the Monterey option will be contacted by the MIIS admissions office. Courses in Monterey are mostly taught in English.  View Monterey dates here.

MA Degree Requirements

Students enrolled in the Chinese School MA program must successfully complete 12 course units in:

-Linguistics for Chinese Language Teachers (3 units required)
-Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment (4 units required)
-Culture: Core and Manifestation of Communication (2 units required)
-Experiential Learning/Teaching Practicum (1 unit required)

Middlebury awards one unit of graduate credit (equivalent to three semester hours) for each graduate course. The normal course load is 3 course units per summer. Most students complete their graduate degree in four summers and have ten years to do so.

Admission to the Chinese School MA program requires a completed online application form and a range of documents that illustrate and demonstrate the applicant's language ability and motivation for acquiring a graduate degree in the teaching of the Chinese language.
