Middlebury Language Schools students receive Outstanding Chinese Teacher Awards

Fang Bian and Ying Zhang—both students in the Middlebury Language Schools’ Master’s in Chinese degree program—are the two recipients of the 2023 Outstanding Chinese Teacher Award of the Chinese Language Association of Secondary-Elementary Schools (CLASS).

Zhang is a Mandarin teacher at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tennessee where she teaches Chinese 1 through 4 AP and works with the Asian Culture Club. She serves as a board member of the Tennessee World Language Teaching Association. Fang Bian teaches Mandarin Chinese at Mahwah High School and Ramapo Ridge Middle School in New Jersey. 

Bian and Zhang both completed three 6-week summers with Middlebury and are scheduled to graduate in August 2024 after a final 6-week summer. The Master in Chinese focuses specifically on Teaching Chinese as a Second Language and is designed for current teachers of Chinese or those who wish to teach Chinese.

“I was delighted to hear that Fang Bian and Ying Zhang were named recipients of the 2023 CLASS Outstanding Chinese Teacher Awards, said Cecilia Chang, Director of the Chinese School. “This is a tremendous honor and both a testament to their teaching ability and the incredible team of faculty we have assembled at Middlebury Chinese School.” 

Zhang said, “I am extremely grateful for this honor and for Middlebury. At Middlebury Language Schools, I grew into the teacher I am today. I will forever be grateful to Middlebury.”

Bian added, “The more we learn, the more we teach. The more we enjoy learning, the more we enjoy teaching.”

CLASS is a non-profit professional organization that represents Chinese language educators at all levels from elementary to secondary schools. The annual Outstanding Chinese Teacher Award is presented by the CLASS awards committee, a group of practicing teachers in the field of K-12 Chinese. The award ceremony will take place at this year’s ACTFL Annual Convention in Chicago on November 18.
