When will I know what trip I’m going on?

We will notify you of your trip assignment via your Middlebury email account in July.  We’ll also send you a detailed list of things you will need for your trip, and provide an opportunity to reserve gear that you might need to borrow from us.  You will meet with your group and leaders for the first time at the September 6th "Prep Rally", where your chapter of more than a quarter century of trips tradition begins!

How and when do I Register for a trip?

Trips registration will start after May 8th. The deadline to register for your trip is June 15th

Click here for directions on how to register here.

What trips are there to pick from?

Too many to list here! You can read full descriptions of each trip during the registration process.  Click here to start learning about our trips!

Is borrowing gear free?

YES!  Gear at Middlebury is always free to borrow.  The only time we charge is if you return gear late!

For the trips program a complete packing list will be sent with your trip assignment.  You’ll be surprised at how much of the required gear you already have, and many trips, especially the Community Engagement and Vermont Explorations trips, require very little equipment. For more gear-intensive trips, MiddView has a substantial supply of crucial gear such as backpacks and sleeping bags available on a first come, first served basis at no charge.    We ask that students on these trips, who have their own personal gear such as sleeping bags, sleeping pads and backpacks, bring it with them to save our inventory for those who need it most.  Please don’t let equipment concerns influence your trip choices. We’re committed to working with participants to ensure everyone has all that they need.

Below is a list of equipment you can borrow free of charge if your trip requires them

  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad
  • Frame pack - (for backpacking and trail maintenance trips)
  • Day pack (for day hikers, rock climbers and adventure samplers)
  • Climbing gear (Harness, helmet and shoes – for climbing and adventure sampler trips)
  • Personal Floatation Device (for sailing trips and canoe trips)
Are the trips free?

Yes!  There is no additional fee!

Who do I contact if I have questions about MiddView Trips?

If you have other questions regarding the trips portion of MiddView, please email trips@middlebury.edu.  Our staff checks this email regularly and we are happy to answer any questions you may have.

Power Down and Connect Up

Many of the trips will be in locations with limited (or no!) cell phone reception.  We encourage students to put their cell phones, iPods, tablets , and other devices  away and use this unique opportunity to make face-to-face connections within their new peers.

I am a transfer or exchange student - Do I go on the trips?

Yes! Transfer and Exchange students participate in two days of off-campus experiences, returning to campus each evening.    During these days you'll explore areas and communities surrounding the College. You'll travel with other transfer and exchange students to different places, all guided by other Middlebury College students! Click here for more information!

When you begin the registration process, be sure to click on the Transfer and Exchange registration button!

What if my family needs to contact me?

If your family needs to contact you for emergency purposes during your trip, they can call Middlebury Public Safety at 802-443-5911. Public Safety will contact trip staff who will have detailed itineraries for all trips and be able to contact you. Please note that doing so may take considerable time (sometimes many hours) for trips traveling in remote locations.

What happens during the trip registration process?

During the registration process you will select your top 4 trip preferences and provide us with any pertinent medical or personal history.   We’ll also have you sign a release form.

What if I am traveling from abroad?

We recognize that students coming from abroad have baggage restrictions as they travel to Middlebury.  Please do not let this influence your trip choice.  We will work with you through the gear-issuing process to ensure that you have the equipment you need.

What if I am a student athlete?

All student athletes are required to participate on a Middview trip. Our Athletics Director, coaches and captains all know that first-year students will be off campus the weekend of the trips.  We recognize that it may be difficult to leave your team for the weekend, but it is a great way to meet people beyond your team.  Please feel free to contact us with questions at trips@middlebury.edu.
