Mission and Goals
MiddView Mission and Goals
The mission of Orientation is to assist new students and their families with their transition to Middlebury College, to engage students in becoming contributing members of the campus community from the start, and to launch new students on a meaningful educational journey.
In fulfillment of the mission, Orientation provides new students with intentional opportunities to:
- explore Middlebury College’s academic expectations, community standards, and campus resources
- develop a sense of belonging through connections with the Middlebury College and broader community
- create a dynamic exchange of ideas, perspectives and experiences among diverse individuals
Reflections on Orientation by Dean of Students Katy Smith Abbott:
"Campus life and conversation at Middlebury is characterized by a breadth of inquiry that extends from classroom to dining hall to dorm room. It is a place where students learn by doing, and where the liberal arts take on a global reach through study and through engagement with the world beyond the Middlebury campus. First-year Orientation serves as a bridge, linking students’ experiences before their arrival at Middlebury to the community in which they will now play a vital role. To this end, Orientation incorporates a wide-range of programs and experiences intended to introduce students to each other, as well as to the culture and rich academic landscape of Middlebury College."
