The Conflict Transformation Fellowship is partial funding awarded to current graduate students at the Language Schools and other institutions for the Summer Immersion Programs and Graduate Programs at Middlebury Language Schools.

Funded by the Kathryn Wasserman Davis Collaborative in Conflict Transformation, this select group of Language Schools students will focus on the ways that conflict transformation (the development of creative solutions to conflict-based systems and situations) manifests in diverse regions, cultures, contexts, and fields around the globe.

Eligibility

The fellowship is only available to:

  1. Current graduate students (other institutions) applying to the Summer Immersion Programs

  2. New and returning MA and DML students at the Middlebury Language Schools

Successful fellowship applications typically have a strong background in conflict transformation. Students represent a wide range of graduate programs and professions.

Funding

  • 8-week students (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian)
    • Up to $5,000 in scholarship funding
  • 7-week students (French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish)
    • Up to $3,000 in scholarship funding
  • Language Schools graduate students (all languages)
    • Up to $3,000 in scholarship funding

The scholarship can be in addition to need-based financial aid, but the total amount cannot exceed the cost of tuition, on-campus housing, and food.

Outcomes

  • Engage in Conflict Transformation workshops during the summer Language Schools.
  • Connect and collaborate with students and staff across languages.
  • Submit a short report summarizing professional or scholarship goals related to the concepts, skills, and dispositions addressed in the field of Conflict Transformation. Report due by October 1, 2025.

Applications are due by 11:59 PM EST, December 15.

Application

  1. An online Language Schools application, which includes:
  • $75 non-refundable application fee
  • Letter(s) of recommendation (required for the Language Schools application only. Letters of recommendation are not required for the Fellowship application, and will not be reviewed by the Fellowship Committee)
  • Transcript(s)

   2. Online scholarship supplement (After you have submitted your application, you will receive an email with a link to apply for all scholarships.), which includes:

  • Essay (500-600 words): Outline both your current graduate studies and work experience and how they are connected to Conflict Transformation. Discuss your interest in the language and regions as these relate to your work.
  • CV or resume

Your Conflict Transformation application will not be considered if you are missing any of the above components of the application by the deadline. Mailed items (if needed) should be received by December 15:
