March 5, 2006

A national association of foreign language faculty has presented its 2005 Award for Distinguished Service in the Profession to Michael R. Katz, professor of Russian at Middlebury College and dean emeritus of Middlebury's Language Schools and Schools Abroad.

The Association of Departments of Foreign Languages (ADFL) said Katz "has illustrated, as few can, extraordinary dedication coupled with outstanding accomplishments to the field of foreign languages."

Katz was the dean of the Language Schools and Schools Abroad from 1998 through 2004 when the Portuguese School was added to Middlebury's summer Language Schools, the Schools Abroad expanded from seven sites in five countries to 21 sites in seven countries, and Middlebury College strengthened its partnership with seven Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

A former professor of Russian at both Williams College (his alma mater) and the University of Texas, Katz was cited for his teaching ability at all levels of Russian Studies, his numerous accomplishments within the professional associations for Russian teachers and scholars, his service to ADFL and the Modern Language Association, and his scholarship as a commentator, editor, and translator of Russian literature.
