Who is eligible for the Language Schools?
Students and teachers, scholars and artists, entrepreneurs and political leaders from ages 18 to 80+ and from all language levels gather at the Language Schools every summer. A school may make an exception for students under 18 who have both a demonstrated commitment to the language and/or experience living or studying away from home. Some schools that have historically admitted younger students are: School of Hebrew, School of Japanese, School of Korean, and the Portuguese School.
What Languages and Programs does Middlebury Language Schools offer?
Middlebury offers both Immersion Programs and Summer Programs. Please see a list of our Program Options.
Middlebury offers 13 languages for the Immersion Programs. Most programs are either 7 or 8 weeks long, with some shorter options in Abenaki, Hebrew, and Russian.
Middlebury offers 10 languages for the Graduate Programs. These programs can be completed over four 6-week summers (over a 10-year period). French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish have the option to start in Vermont, and complete the degree with an academic year abroad in France, Germany, Italy, or Spain. Hebrew, Japanese, Korean and the Master of Arts in teaching (MAT) with Licensure have online options during the academic year.
When can I apply to the Language Schools?
The application opens on November 1 for each summer. Please see directions on how to apply for either our Immersions Programs or Graduate Programs. The final deadline to apply is May 15 before the summer you plan to enroll.
Do you have scholarships for the Language Schools?
Yes, Middlebury College offers generous fellowships and scholarships and financial aid for our immersion students and graduate students.
Fellowships and Scholarship can either be full or partial (tuition, housing, and food) for both Immersions students and Graduate students.
For students using a summer FLAS Fellowship to study with us, we cover the remaining cost of tuition, room, and board for the summer.
Financial aid for Immersion students ranges from 45-65% of tuition, housing and food.
Financial aid for Graduate students is up to 100% (tuition, housing and food) of demonstrated need.
Does Middlebury have partnerships to help fund graduate students?
Middlebury has partnered with different organizations to provide funding for our MA degrees to qualified alumni. Alumni can receive an application fee waiver and are eligible for our need-based graduate financial aid, depending on your demonstrated financial need and degree track. Our financial aid is awarded in the form of grants, not loans.

Does Middlebury match the Segal Award?
Middlebury Language Schools is an official partner with AmeriCorps, CityYear, and Teach For America.
Middlebury will match the Segal Education Award up to $1,000 for Segal Awards.
Do you have heritage learners who enroll in the Language Schools?
Yes, we have heritage learners in all of the languages each summer. We also offer a Russian Heritage Program at our School of Russian.
