Alla Fil received her PhD in Spanish Literature and Cultural Studies from Georgetown University. Her field of studies is twentieth century Spanish literature with focus on travel narratives and touristic phenomena in Francoist Spain.
Prior to coming to Middlebury College in 2012, Alla taught at New York University Department of Spanish and Portuguese for 11 years, where she also coordinated first-year Spanish Program and teacher assistants’ training. She has also taught at the Middlebury College Spanish Summer School.

Intermediate Spanish
This accelerated course is designed to review, reinforce, and consolidate the linguistic structures that students need in order to reach the intermediate level of proficiency in Spanish. A grammar review will accompany intensive language acquisition, vocabulary expansion, readings, discussions, and compositions. (SPAN 0103 or SPAN 0105 or SPAN 0104 or placement tests) 3 hrs. lect., 1 hr. drill.

Intermediate Spanish II
A course for students seeking to perfect their academic writing skills in Spanish. The course is also an introduction to literary analysis and critical writing and will include reading and oral discussion of literary texts. The course will also include a thorough review of grammar at a fairly advanced level. This course may be used to fulfill the foreign languages distribution requirement. Course Description
Of Tourists and Travelers: Travel, Identity, and Empathy in Peninsular Spanish Literature
In this course students will explore the representation of travel and cultural encounters from the Romantic gaze of the nineteenth century to contemporary fiction. We will apply a theoretical framework to the analysis of Peninsular literary texts to address a simple question: what is the difference between a tourist and a traveler? The answer will reveal fundamentally different ways of relating to the unknown, to cultural otherness, and ultimately to oneself.
