Christian Obst grew up in Bonn, and holds a M.A. in Comparative Literature, Philosophy, and Sociology from the Goethe-University in Frankfurt/Main, as well as an M.A. and a PhD in German Studies from Brown University. His research focuses on 18th and 19th century literature and philosophy, as well as early 20th century culture and critical theory, with special attention to the relationship between verbal and visual paradigms of thought and expression. He is also interested in how the idea of what is “human” is defined and transformed over the course of history, and up to the present day. At Middlebury, he teaches German courses at all levels, including courses on literature and theory taught in English.
