Jeremy Horowitz

Jeremy Horowitz is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Middlebury College. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego. He also holds a Master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University / SAIS, and a BA from Oberlin College. 

His research focuses on political development in Africa’s emerging democracies, with a particular interest in elections, voter behavior, and democratic consolidation. He has conducted research in Kenya, Ghana, Malawi, Senegal, Tanzania, and South Africa. His first book, Multiethnic Democracy, was published by Oxford University Press in 2022. He has published articles in the American Journal of Political Science, Comparative Political Studies, Political Behavior, and other journals. 

He teaches courses on African politics, ethnic conflict, international development, and comparative politics. Prior to joining Middlebury, Jeremy taught at Dartmouth College from 2012 to 2022. He has also held international research positions at the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago, the Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) at UC Berkeley, and Habitat for Humanity International. His current research focuses on urbanization, inter-marriage, and migration in Africa.
