Dan Schar

Dan Schar is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Global Health at Middlebury College and a Visiting Fellow at the One Health Trust where his research focuses on mitigating antimicrobial resistance and emerging disease risk across food production systems.  A veterinarian and spatial epidemiologist, Dan advised the development of a free market veterinary sector in Mongolia as a Henry Luce Scholar and led health security programs in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia at the U.S. Department of State. He provides technical and policy guidance for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the private sector and non-governmental organizations.  Previously, Dan served in Senior One Health and Senior Emerging Infectious Diseases Advisor roles at the U.S. Agency for International Development, including fourteen years in Bangkok where he expanded a portfolio of disease prevention and response efforts across twelve countries addressing emerging viral zoonoses, avian influenza, antimicrobial resistance, and economic approaches to emerging infectious disease prevention. In addition to research and policy publications, Dan’s writing has appeared in the New York Times, Scientific American, Stat, Science, South China Morning Post, and Slate. He is a graduate of Amherst College, holds a doctoral degree in veterinary medicine from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in spatial epidemiology from the Université libre de Bruxelles in Belgium.
