Julia Alvarez is a writer, whose novels include How The GarcĂa Girls Lost Their Accents and In the Time of the Butterflies.  She’s also a prize-winning poet, children’s author and essayist.  She earned her Masters in Creative Writing at Syracuse University, and after teaching at a number of universities, she came to Middlebury college in 1988 as a full-time faculty member.  Her work has earned her numerous awards, including the 2009 F. Scott Fitzgerald Award for Excellence in American Literature as well as the Hispanic Heritage Award in 2002.  She has twice been a finalist for National Book Critics Award and her work has often been a selection for the One Book/One City national program. She and her husband have founded a model farm/literacy project in her native Dominican Republic, Alta Gracia, where many Middlebury College students have spent time as volunteers and fellows.   Professor Alvarez is currently a writer in residence on campus. She travels around the country, lecturing and presenting her work, and is available to the college community as a resource and consultant and outside reader for creative writing theses as well as an advisor for Alianza, the Latino organization on campus.  Occasionally, she teaches workshops in creative writing (poetry & prose).
