English classroom in California

Serving low-intermediate to advanced students, Middlebury’s 13th Language School will run year-round at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey starting in 2022.

Harnessing more than a century of immersive language teaching, the Middlebury Language Schools will launch its English Language School in June 2022. The new program, serving low-intermediate to advanced students, will take place at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California.

The new school will offer eight- and 16-week sessions during the spring and fall semesters as well as an eight-week summer session. The first session begins June 27.

“Like the other Language Schools, students who enroll in the English Language School are looking to make great strides in their language learning,” said Rogers Walker, the school’s director. “Students read, write, listen, and speak English 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They follow the Language Pledge to communicate only in the language they’re studying. This time-tested immersive approach results in rapid progress for our students.”

During the summer session, students may choose to live in campus housing at the Institute’s newly renovated Munras residence hall in Monterey, a short walk from campus and nearby grocery stores, restaurants, and the Del Monte Shopping Center.

In addition to classes, students will take part in cultural and social activities, including lectures, concerts, movies, plays, dinners, wine seminars, parties, club meetings, and picnics, all while exploring the city of Monterey, California, on the southern edge of Monterey Bay. All activities will be conducted in English with each designed to help build and reinforce vocabulary while developing cultural fluency.

The English Language School welcomes students who have had some basic English study. They should know the English alphabet, basic English vocabulary, how to read and write basic sentences in English, and how to have a simple conversation in English. The school will serve students in low-intermediate, intermediate, high-intermediate, and advanced levels.

“Our program is ideal for undergraduate and graduate students who wish to improve their English proficiency,” says Walker. “It’s also an excellent option for working professionals whose careers could benefit from improved language skills.”

The English Language School is now accepting applications for summer and fall sessions. The application deadline for the summer is May 15. Students do not need to take the TOEFL to apply.
