Twelve Students and Recent Graduates Offered Fulbright Fellowships

Five Middlebury seniors, two Language Schools Students and five recent alumni (including two members of ’19.5 February class) have been offered Fulbright fellowships for the 2020–2021 academic year. In addition, four Middlebury seniors and two alumni were selected as alternates for the Fulbright fellowship.
The fellows were selected on the basis of their academic and professional achievements, as well as their service and leadership in their respective fields. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, they will join the more than 1,900 Fulbright recipients in 2020–2021 worldwide.
“I’m thrilled for our students and alumni who were offered Fulbright grants. This is a highly competitive national fellowship and our students and alumni are consistent standouts, due in particular to our strong international focus and language programs,” said Lisa Gates, associate dean for fellowships and research. “For example, of the six total research grants to Japan for college seniors, two were offered to Middlebury seniors.”
Gates pointed out that, with COVID-19, “this will be a different year for many potential Fulbrighters. Currently, grant start dates have been pushed back to January 2021 and the U.S. State Department will continue to monitor the health and safety situation. We hope very much that Fulbright programs will be able to operate in 2021, but it is a difficult landscape for our grant recipients in making decisions about their next steps. These are outstanding students and alumni and I am very proud of their accomplishment in receiving a Fulbright grant.”
