Planning to take a summer course abroad? Interested in transfer credit?

You are strongly encouraged to apply for preapproval (if you do not receive preapproval, there is no guarantee that you will receive credit).

Preapproval for Summer Courses Abroad

  • Review transfer credit guidelines in the College Handbook. If your program meets the requirements outlined in the Handbook (e.g., number of weeks and hours, etc.), you can apply for credit preapproval by proceeding with the following steps.
  • Complete the Transfer Credit Application Form and obtain approvals/signatures from the appropriate department chair(s).
  • Return the Transfer Credit Application Form to International Programs along with all required supporting documentation, including a summer session calendar, a course meeting schedule, and any relevant information about the study abroad program (see form for details).
  • Complete the Summer Study Abroad Application Form.
  • If you have questions about programs and/or credit, you should meet with Stacey Thebodo, associate director of international programs.

The deadline to apply for preapproval is May 13, 2024.

Middlebury Sponsored Summer Programs

Middlebury offers several summer program opportunities for students to take field-based and experiential learning courses that might otherwise be difficult to accommodate during the regular academic year. 

Middlebury Museum Studies in Oxford

Spend five weeks in the heart of Oxford, England, with access to world-renowned museum collections at Compton Verney, the Ashmolean Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Museum of the History of Science. Gain unparalleled insight into the structure, management, and activities of museums, as well as the British approach to historic preservation.

Middlebury School of the Environment

This six-week environmental studies program is based in Yunnan Province, China, with dual sites in Kunming and Dali. The program includes three college courses within a specially designed immersive curriculum that integrates core work, electives, leadership training, and field experiences.

Performing Arts & Community Engagement in Uganda

This four-week course (currently for Middlebury College students only) will allow students to immerse themselves in a community of musical instrument makers, exploring the use of the performing arts as a means to effect positive change.
