Beyond classes, teachers, homework and endless lists of Chinese characters lies the heart of our program.
 The Students

This self-selected population shares a common dedication to the study of Chinese.  Together they create a rare environment in which the teachers and students engage in equal exchange of enthusiasm for Chinese language and culture.

To be in a classroom with only a few other students, each one well-prepared, proud of personal progress, and excited to have the opportunity to study such a unique language—that is what makes this program so effective.

Other Student Comments

"Focus, motivation, enjoyment, rewards—these are just a few words to describe my Middlebury Chinese School experience. For nine weeks Vermont's natural splendor provided the perfect complement to this challenging program. Through intensive study, constant student-teacher interaction, and constructive activities, I not only learned Chinese, but lived it as well."
—Katie Scovin, Chinese School

"Study here has accomplished in me what no other organized language study has managed - it has really brought Chinese to life."
—Jerry Marsella, Chinese School

"After this summer, I am going to be speaking at a level that's way beyond my course level. That's because students are not segregated by levels outside class; all of us eat and live together. I've had to figure out what the more advanced students are saying, and I've learned so much that way."
—Dhankumarie Bissu, Chinese School
