Completion of Requirements

All degree requirements must be completed within 10 years following the summer of application, e.g., if the summer of application is 2000, then the dissertation must have been successfully defended by the end of the summer of 2010.

Requirements for the D.M.L. degree were substantially revised in 1996. Students who began the program prior to 1996 may petition the Dean of Language Schools and Schools Abroad to complete their degrees in accordance with the revised requirements, as described in this brochure.

Grades

Students must earn a minimum grade of B+ in each course counted toward the D.M.L. requirements. (Please note that the minimum grade for the qualifying paper completed during the summer of application is A-.) A student who receives a grade lower than a B+ for any course will not be permitted to continue in the program.

Transfer Credits

Credit (up to three courses) may be transferred only for first-language work and must be requested according to regulations of the appropriate School (minimum grade of B+). A student who wishes to transfer any courses should contact the coordinator of the first language to request the Transfer of Credit form. Only credits earned after the successful completion of the summer of application may be considered for transfer. Written approval of the course's transferability should be obtained from Middlebury before registering for the course.

Fees

Students pay the tuition and fees in effect for each summer or academic year of enrollment. D.M.L. students who enroll in a school abroad pay full tuition, even though they may elect to take less than a full load. The dissertation fee is payable upon submission of the dissertation.
