Middlebury is pleased to announce the joint establishment of the Brandeis University–Middlebury School of Hebrew, opening in the summer of 2008. The School of Hebrew is Middlebury’s 10th Language School. The program will be seven weeks long, offer both modern and classical Hebrew courses, and take place on the Middlebury College campus.
The Brandeis University-Middlebury School of Hebrew combines the talents of scholars and professors from the Brandeis Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies with the total linguistic and cultural immersion method for which Middlebury is well known. The instructors from Brandeis University bring to this initiative an innovative curriculum, which is considered one of the most effective instructional programs for studying modern Hebrew in the U.S., while Middlebury provides 93 years of experience in administering intensive language immersion programs.
The School of Hebrew will offer classes at all levels, and will provide an option for studying classical Hebrew as well. Exploring Hebrew in the classroom is not the only way in which students will be exposed to the language. Students at the School will be engaged in a variety of cultural activities designed to maximize their language acquisition. A full range of co-curricular activities will enable students to experience the arts, ideas, and customs that open a window onto Israeli culture. All members of our faculty are native or near native speakers as well as Hebrew scholars. They are committed to teaching Hebrew and exposing students to the culture. Students can expect a challenging, rewarding, and highly effective educational experience at the School of Hebrew.
