1:
Do I have a choice of campus, or will I be enrolled in Mills just because I live closer to California?
A:
All students studying at the undergraduate level in French and Spanish may apply to either the Mills or Middlebury campus, regardless of where they live. Please note: all students in the Arabic School will study at the Mills campus.
2:
What if spaces are already filled at my campus of choice?
A:
If this is the case, you will be offered admission at the other campus, provided space is still available.
3:
Will the classes at Mills be the same as those at the Middlebury campus?
A:
Yes, you will experience the same standard of academic excellence in language immersion at both campuses.
4:
Will both graduate and undergraduate level courses be taught at Mills?
A:
Undergraduate level courses in all three languages will be taught at Mills. Additionally, non-degree graduate level courses in Arabic will be offered.
5:
Will any of the faculty be experienced from Middlebury's summer session?
A:
Certainly. Many of our faculty at the Mills site will have previously been at the Vermont campus.
6:
Will the credits count the same?
A:
There will be absolutely no difference between credits earned in Vermont and those earned in California—both are awarded by Middlebury College.
7:
Will I learn as much at Mills as I would at Middlebury?
A:
You will experience the same rigorous immersion experience at Mills—and the same dramatically accelerated language acquisition—for which Middlebury is known the world over.
8:
Can I live off-campus if I go to Mills?
A:
No. As an essential component of the immersion experience, all students of the Language Schools are required to live on campus, whether at Middlebury or at Mills.
9:
Can I bring my pet?
A:
Pets are not allowed. Thank you for your understanding.
10:
Why is Middlebury opening a second site, and why at this particular location?
A:
Middlebury is responding to a dramatic increase in application volume and enrollment over the past four years. Our choice was to expand or to shrink; we are choosing to expand. After a careful and extensive vetting process, we chose Mills for several reasons: the location allows us to offer our language immersion programs on the West Coast, benefitting both students from this region as well as East Coast students interested in taking advantage of Oakland’s urban diversity and cultural richness; the 135-acre Mills campus is quite beautiful, serene, and secluded, blending well with Middlebury’s overall aesthetic; and, architecturally, Mills lends itself perfectly to the physical separation of the Schools—an essential ingredient in creating a pure-language immersion environment.
11:
Will the Schools at Mills have access to the same learning resources as the Schools at the Vermont campus?
A:
Yes. Much effort has gone into ensuring that the level of resources available to our Mills students is comparable to that offered on our Vermont campus.
12:
Is on-campus parking available?
A:
Yes.
13:
Is the campus monitored by Public Safety?
A:
Yes, the Department of Public Safety monitors the campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
14:
Is there access to computers for students who don’t own laptops?
A:
Yes, there are computer labs available for use by all students.
15:
So, is it the “Mills Arabic School”? How is it different from the Middlebury Arabic School?
A:
It is the Middlebury Arabic School at Mills. Only the location has changed.
16:
Will it be easier to get into the Arabic School?
A:
Admission to the Arabic School has become more—not less—competitive. While we are expanding to Mills, in part, to accommodate this growing demand, we anticipate that admission to the School will remain competitive. In short, it is still advisable to apply early to the Arabic School.
