Toni Cowles
Toni Cowles is from São Paulo. She holds a B.A. in Sociology and Pedagogy from Universidade de São Paulo, an M.A. and Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania. She was at the University of Pennsylvania from 1981 until 2003, working as the Director of the Lauder Institute of Management and International Studies for 17 of those years. After her retirement in 2003 she maintains her affiliation with Penn as the in-house advisor to the Penn Lauder CIBER and to the Wharton/Lauder international programs where she conducts workshops on curriculum design, and second language acquisition methodology and assessment. She continues her role as an OPI certified tester and trainer in Portuguese and Spanish, and pursues her research interests which include second language acquisition and pedagogy, language assessment, and inter-cultural communication. She is recipient of the United States of America Bi-Centennial Award for Outstanding Services in Strengthening Brazilian American Relations. She will be testing the Portuguese students in Middlebury.
