Elena Shmeleva
Elena Shmeleva - I received my M.A. in Structural and Computational Linguistics from Moscow State University (1979) and Ph.D. (Kandidatskaja 1984) in Russian Linguistics from the Institute of Russian Language of Russian Academy of Sciences. I am now a senior research fellow at the Institute of Russian Language of Russian Academy of Sciences.
I have lectured in Russian linguistics at many universities all over the world. I worked as a visiting professor at the University of Tampere (Finland) and Texas Tech University (Lubbock, Texas) and as a teacher of Russian as a second language at the British International School in Moscow.
I am the co-author of a book Russkij anekdot: tekst i rechevoj zhanr [Russian Joke: Text and Speech Genre] Moscow, 2002) and the author of more than 100 articles. My articles have dealt with modern Russian – its word formation and lexicography, linguistic changes in at the beginning of XXI century and speech culture.
For five years (2002–7) I was the author and presenter of a weekly radio program about Russian language “Gramotej” (“Mayak”) and for a year (2007) - author and presenter of a weekly TV program about Russian language “Znaem russkij” (“Mir”). My programs were twice nominated as the best language programs in Russian media.
I have three sons, two daughters-in-law and many friends throughout the world. I enjoy inviting my friends and family to my house or visiting them, talking, telling jokes and dancing.
