Brian Johnson - I received a BA in Dramatic Arts and Russian Language and Literature from Macalester College in 1993. I entered the PhD program in Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1998. I received a Masters degree in 2000 and will defend my PhD thesis this upcoming fall of 2007. During my academic hiatus from 1993 to 1998, I first traveled around Europe and spent nine months teaching English in Riga, Latvia then returned home and acted in the Minneapolis-based theater company “Bedlam Theatre.” I first traveled to Russia in the spring of 1992 when I studied for a semester at Herzen Pedagogical Institute in St. Petersburg. I returned to Herzen to study some ten years later from 2003-2004, and returned again the following summer in 2005 as Resident Director for the ACTR summer study abroad program in St. Petersburg. I was also a participant in the ACTR Teacher Training Program at Moscow State University in the summer of 2004. I am currently finishing my dissertation on Dostoevsky’s depiction of the falling sickness and other nervous disorders in his works. In my spare time I cook, hike, bird-watch, practice yoga and play rugby.
