To acquire a new language, start by engaging your mind.

Even at the beginner level, the topics you’ll explore in the Spanish School are far from elementary. Why? Because Middlebury believes that engaging your mind with topics of interest—from history and the arts to current events and cooking—builds the motivation you need to succeed.

The Spanish School is a summer home for some of the foremost teachers, scholars, and artists in the Spanish-speaking world. As a student, you will benefit from a rigorous classroom environment, as well as daily individual review sessions and drop-in evening office hours with your teachers. You will also join them in a wide array of cocurricular activities. Whether you are discussing Spanish culture over coffee, cooking paella in the kitchen, or preparing a theatrical performance, the Language Pledge—a promise to read, write, listen, and speak in only the language of study—will ensure that every moment of the day, great or small, is an opportunity for you to practice and improve your language skills.

This powerful combination of classroom study and cocurricular activities has made the Spanish School one of the world’s premier language programs. Whether you’re pursuing an advanced degree, getting ready for travel abroad, preparing to teach in the classroom, or advancing your business career, the total immersion environment of the School will help you achieve your language goals.

Beginning in the summer of 2009, all students at the undergraduate level in the Spanish School may elect to study at our new site at Mills College, in Oakland, California, if space permits.   Application and financial aid processes are identical to those for the Middlebury campus.
