Fernando Operé, born in Madrid, Spain, is Professor of Spanish, and Director of the Latin American Studies Program at the University of Virginia. He is an expert on Latin American Literature, Colonial and 19th Century, and Spanish and Latin American Poetry. He has published the following books: Indian Captivity in Spanish America: Frontier Narratives (2008); España y los españoles de hoy (2007); Historias de la frontera. El cautiverio en la América hispánica (2001); Cautivos (1997); and Civilización y barbarie en la literatura argentina del siglo XIX. El Tirano Rosas (1987), as well as numerous articles on romanticism, modernism, captivity literature, poetry, frontiers, and historical novel. He has also published poems in many magazines in Spain, USA and Latin America, and the following books: Anotado al margen. Cuaderno de ruta (2007); Memorial del olvido (2005); Alfabeto de ausencias (2002); Poetas sin fronteras: anthology (2000); Salmos de la materia (2000); Amor a los cuerpos (1997); Acróbata de ternuras (1994); ¿Quién eres tú Betty Blue?
