Alma Simounet Bey, from Puerto Rico, has been a professor of English, Spanish, and Linguistics at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras, since 1968, and has collaborated with the Spanish and English linguistic programs at the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Croix. Her areas of interest include bilingualism, ethnolinguistics, discourse analysis, language and ideology, and intercultural communications. She has been involved in ethnographic research with the Puerto Rican migratory group in St. Croix for the past seventeen years. Her publications include The Sociolinguistic Analysis of Sale Encounters in St. Croix: An Ethnography Approach (1990), and Lengua e identidad: vínculos que no siempre unen (1999).
