Summer Courseware

The Spanish School offers seven-week intensive language sessions from beginning to advanced levels. All levels emphasize both the development of language skills and the understanding of Hispanic culture. Classes are taught in Spanish, and students are expected to abide by the Language Pledge to speak only Spanish, in and outside of class, throughout the session. Placement in a specific level is determined by language proficiency rather than by length of previous exposure to the language. Daily activities normally include three or four hours of classroom instruction plus additional work in the language laboratory. Each level has an integrated program and students must take all parts for a total of three undergraduate units.

See Language Schools Information for more information on: Calendar and Fees; Other Academic Programs; Academic Policies; Residence Life and Extracurricular Activities; Facilities; Admissions and Financial Aid.

The School in Spain has programs designed for undergraduates wishing to spend their junior year in Spain and for graduates who complete their MA degree with an academic year in Madrid.

Credit

Credit is defined in terms of units. One unit equals three semester hours.

Undergraduate courses in the seven-week session (levels 100-400) award three units (nine semester hours) of undergraduate credit.

For transfer purposes, the student's home institution determines how many graduate or undergraduate credits will be granted for the summer's work at Middlebury.

All credits expire after ten years. The validity of a degree, which certifies a level of achievement, does not expire.

Auditing

Due to the intensive nature of the summer Language Schools, auditing is strongly discouraged. Under certain circumstances, however, auditing for a fee may be permitted with the approval of the Director of the School. For more information, refer to the Language Schools Handbook.

Financial Aid

Middlebury College offers financial assistance to a substantial percentage of students attending the summer session and the graduate programs abroad. Information about the financial aid application process for the summer accompanies admissions materials published by the Language Schools each year.

Enrollment

Upon acceptance, all students must pay a $400 non-refundable enrollment deposit to be applied to the tuition charges.

Application and Admission

Application materials for the 2009 summer session and the 2009-2010 academic year abroad are available online.
