German School performs opera in Middlebury and Vergennes
October 19, 2011
For the first time in its 12-year history, the German School’s German for Singers and Vocal Coaches program produced a fully staged German opera and performed it at Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater and the Vergennes Opera House in early August to much acclaim. Now under the directorship of Bettina Matthias, the program was revamped to introduce singers not only to a wide variety of German art songs and arias, but also to allow them to participate in the production of Mozart’s early opera La Finta Giardiniera (Die falsche Gärtnerin), directed and accompanied from the piano by Christoph Hagel (Berlin), winner of the 2010 ECHO special award for classical music. All rehearsals were conducted in German, thus emulating conditions that singers have to master when seeking musical work abroad. Hagel’s modern adaptation of Mozart’s opera, compensating for necessary cuts in the score with clever narrative interludes, let singers and audiences experience the full depth of Mozart’s art of the opera.
